The increase in the number of commercial banks in Egypt has led
to increased competition in the banking system as well as the introduction
of more innovative and sophisticated banking products.
Nonetheless, the system is over-banked and fragmented. The Government
of Egypt is currently undertaking a comprehensive reform strategy
for the financial sector as a whole and the banking system in specific.
To benchmark the anticipated improvements in banking performance
contemplated by the ongoing liberalization and reform measures,
the Business Studies & Analysis Center has undertaken this ranking
of commercial banks in Egypt. Rankings were performed prior to the
recent mergers and acquisitions. Data was obtained from 25 out of
the 28 commercial banks operating in Egypt. Sixteen of the participating
banks are AmCham members. The United Bank of Egypt, Mohandes Bank
and Egyptian Workers Bank were excluded due to unavailability of
data.
Rankings also exclude foreign branches of commercial banks such
as Citibank, as they do not publish their own fig-figures, although
they contribute significantly to commercial banking in Egypt. Rankings
were performed for 2002 and 2003 on basis of assets, deposits, loans,
and profitability. Other ranking criteria include the number of
branches, number of employees and shareholders' equity. This publication
is intended to be a convenient and easy to consult booklet for businesses
and a unique reference on the banking industry in Egypt.
