Kurtzer at the Syrian Club
In his speech to the American Chamber
of Commerce on May 22, at the Syrian Club, Alexandria, Ambassador
Daniel C. Kurtzer reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties
between the United States and Alexandria.
The ambassador recently visited an
institute of technology and met with staff members working on building
Alexandria into an IT center. The focus of his speech was on
international trade and what Egypt and the United States are doing together to
expand trade. As the third largest city in Africa and Egypts
leading port, as well as a major industrial and commercial center,
Alexandria is at the forefront of expanding Egypts international
commerce.
Kurtzer identified barriers to
increasing Egypts exports and maintained that one of Egypts most
important assets in increasing trade is its location, which will be
more valuable when strong private sector links with international
firms can provide intermediate inputs, technology and export markets.
Kurtzer stressed the importance of support programs to increase trade:
"Promote trade, promote exports, promote commerce so that economic
activity replaces reliance upon aid." The ambassador also discussed
a framework for trade and investment, and the important role of
the private sector.
