Regional, Multilateral and Bilateral Trade Opportunities
AmCham hosted a
special luncheon on
April 18 with the Honorable William Archer, United States congressman
(R-Texas) and chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee. Archer
came with a bipartisan delegation including seven other members of
Congress: Nancy Johnson (R-Connecticut); Amo Houghton (R-New York);
Rob Portman (R-Ohio); Phil English (R-Pennsylvania); Robert Matsui
(D-California); Jim McDermott (D-Washington); and John Tanner
(D-Tennessee).
The topic of the discussion was
"Regional, multilateral and bilateral trade opportunities,"
and the format - an off-the-record meeting, with one congressional
delegate to a table along with guests with an interest in his or her
particular state - ensured that discussions, though informal, remained
firmly focused on business.
All of the delegates are active
participants in congressional committees, and several are members of
the Ways & Means Committee, widely regarded as the most powerful
organ of the U.S. House of Representatives. The committee's jurisdiction
includes federal revenue measures - including American assistance to
Egypt - as well as the bonded debt of the United States, the deposit
of public monies and national social security. Of critical importance
to the Egyptian business community, the committee is also responsible
for the drafting of reciprocal trade agreements and legislation
pertaining to trade and tariffs and the administration of customs
districts and ports.
After an address by Congressman Archer, guests had the opportunity
to submit questions pertaining to the U.S.-Egypt economic partnership
and the workings of the U.S. Congress. The event also provided a
forum for face-to-face networking between parties with far-reaching
common interests in trade between the two countries.
